Continuing the Tour!

On August 23, the Governor's tour continued, with a visit to the Sullivan Elementary school library in Ulysses. Mrs. Mitchell, the school librarian, showed us around the library and explained some of the creative programs and outreach done to instill a love of reading and learning in their students.

The next library stop was in Lakin where
the Governor read to children at the
Kearny County Library and we talked
with library staffer Patty Timm and
director Richard Brookman. If you
want to know anything about graphic
fiction or non-fiction, Richard is the
librarian to ask!

We had a wonderful surprise when we walked into the Hamilton County Library in Syracuse as the library staff there had created a ten-foot replica of the last page of the book No Matter What by Debi Gliori! The Hamilton County Library Board president introduced Governor Sebelius and gave warm words of praise for the One Book, One State project. The Governor then read to a group of preschoolers assembled to meet her.

When at Syracuse, I had a chance to
talk with some of the area
librarians, including the
new director of the
Southwestern Kansas Library
System, Emily Sitz. Emily is
on the far left in this picture
next to the Governor,
Denise Smith (Stanton County Library Director), Joyce Armstrong (Hamilton County Library Director) and me.

It was a great tour, and we visited some outstanding libraries. I love the western side of Kansas
with it's rolling hills and wide open areas. As I was driving back to Topeka, I saw my first field of sunflowers and just had to take a picture!
